Seven umpires in Major League Baseball are going to take buyouts and retire at the end of this season, and if that sounds like rather a lot to you, congratulations on being a close-attention-paying type of fan/person/baseball nerd/all-purpose nerd.
How you knew this, I’m not quite sure, but well done you. You are correct: MLB normally has a working cast of 76 full-time umps, so to lose upward of 10% of them in a single off-season is noteworthy, especially considering that normal turnover is in the 1 to 3 umpire range.
