A lot of schadenfreude over the disinvitation of Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, Deion’s kid, from the first two days of the NFL Draft. Almost every time Deion speaks, on this or almost any other topic, you can understand why.
The father is a serial hype artist who long ago figured out that one can over-volume one’s way past a lot of situations in life. He has an MS in BS. He’s also a Hall of Fame football player who has been (so far) a very effective college head coach, recruiter and NIL money-finder. He’s got skins on the wall, as the cliche goes. And apart from talking about himself, there’s nothing that Deion loves more than to flap gums about his sons.
That includes Shedeur, the quarterback for his dad these past two seasons in Boulder. But Deion oversold Shedeur, it seems, by a drastic number of NFL draft picks and an astounding amount of signing-bonus money.
Obviously, then, the NFL is letting Deion know who runs the show. They’ll draft his kid whenever and wherever a team wants to. And they’re telling Deion that his helicopter-dad routine is already harming his son’s career.
Or — wait. Hear me out. Is it possible that the people who orbit the NFL just don’t understand what the league wants?
