Notre Dame’s win in the Sugar Bowl wasn’t pretty. It was a grinder game from the outset. Georgia played without its injured star quarterback, Carson Beck, and scored only 10 points. The Irish struggled, but they converted a turnover by the Bulldogs into a critical touchdown just before halftime, then got a kick return TD to open the third quarter and won 23-10.
It was a fine victory, coming as it did out of the chaos of the New Orleans tragedy and the rescheduling of the game itself. Notre Dame’s fans were huge in numbers. The gold glinted bright off the helmets inside the Superdome.
After, Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman spoke movingly about his team’s chemistry, and his defensive coordinator, Al Golden, added this about the players: “I think they choose Notre Dame for all the right reasons. It’s not me, me, me. Any of those guys, to come here and submit to the program and put your ego aside and go for team glory? That’s rare. Rare, rare, rare.”
What a great story! If only it were true.
