Well, for starters, three is pretty good. Not too many quarterbacks in NFL history have three Super Bowl rings. Even the guy who quarterbacked the first Super Bowl, back when it wasn’t called a Super Bowl, didn’t win three.

True story. Bart Starr was the QB of the Packers’ victories over the Chiefs and then the Raiders in the first two AFL-NFL World Championship games, as they were called in 1967 and ‘68. After that, the game got a more marketable moniker (and a trophy named after Vince Lombardi), and Green Bay took about a 30-year break from the festivities. Starr stuck on two.

John Elway wound up with two rings, and Roger Staubach, and Peyton Manning. Fran Tarkenton went 0-3 in the big game, Jim Kelly 0-4. Brett Favre got a ring, but only the one — and sure, I realize that “only” is a silly guttersnipe when you consider how difficult it is to have a winning NFL season, let alone get on a run that leads a team all the way to the SB.

But the point is that Patrick Mahomes has a chance Sunday to win his third ring. He’s 28 years old. The Chiefs are still going for it every year.

So sure, let’s talk legacy.
